Cannon Sleep Products was originally founded in 1959 as the Pleasant Bag Company. Ernt “Ernie” Morgenstern emigrated from Vienna, Austria after World War II to escape the chaos that was widespread in Europe at the time. Ernie used his newfound freedom to create an industrial rag and bag company. Buying unusable clothing from the Salvation Army, Goodwill and other “thrift” stores, Ernie turned the material into rags for local industries. While making his rounds at the various stores, Ernie noticed the many old mattresses being thrown away. Hence, a mattress repair restoration business was formed to recycle the many old beds-called Pleasant Mattress Company Inc. The beds were repaired and sterilized, then sold to “Mom and Pop” furniture stores.
While Pleasant Mattress Company was growing as a restoration and repair business, young Herb, Ernie’s son was working along side his father. In 1970 Herb became a full-time partner with his father at Pleasant Mattress Company Inc. During the 1970’s Herb learned the business and in 1979 became the President of the company.
In the early 1980’s PMI began to manufacture new bedding along with the recycled bedding. During the 1980’s PMI moved to a larger site in Fresno and the company continued to grow. In 1990 PMI started manufacturing futons, and today we are one of the largest producers of futons in the United States. By 1996 PMI stopped producing recycled bedding and started marketing new bedding and futons using the name Cannon Sleep Products®. Cannon Sleep Products® is dedicated to producing quality new bedding and futons.
